Why building a UK dividend income feels harder than it should

Most UK investors like you aren’t short of information. You’re drowning in it.

What you’re missing is a clear, joined‑up plan you can actually follow.

Maybe this sounds familiar:

  • You’ve read plenty of articles, blogs and forum posts but still feel unsure what to buy
  • You’ve picked a few dividend shares, but the portfolio lacks a coherent theme
  • You’ve read some annual reports but don’t know how to separate corporate guff from key facts
  • You worry about dividend cuts and “yield traps” but aren’t sure what red flags to look for
  • You’d like your income to grow ahead of inflation, but don’t know which companies are likely to deliver that

So you either sit in cash, stay in passive funds, or keep a messy mix of shares that doesn’t feel intentional.

A clear model portfolio and information you can act on

The UK Dividend Stocks newsletter is a monthly PDF with 20 to 30 pages focused 100% on one thing: helping you build a robust dividend growth portfolio from quality UK companies.

Every issue gives you:

  • A simple model portfolio
The newsletter follows a simple model portfolio of UK dividend shares that has been running since 2011.
  • New and existing holdings explained in plain English
Each new holding is reviewed without jargon: what it does, how it’s performed in the past, its competitive strengths, potential risks, and what could drive future growth.
  • Clear descriptions of buy, hold and sell decisions
Know which shares I’m buying, selling, trimming or topping up, and why, so you can become a better investor and make your own decisions with confidence.
  • Educational commentary
Embedded within the newsletter you’ll find lessons on important topics like diversification, position sizing, valuation methods and the psychology of investing.
  • Critical context for understanding the valuation cycle
Understand where we are in the stock market valuation cycle, with monthly updates on how cheap (or expensive) the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 are right now.

All of this is written for intelligent, sensible investors who don’t want impenetrable jargon or 50‑page research reports.

Why listen to me?

I’m John Kingham, a private investor who has been investing in UK shares since the mid-1990s, and since 2010 I've focused on quality companies that can pay and grow reliable dividends.

I used to work as an insurance software analyst, but in 2011 I started publishing an investment newsletter for UK investors who, like me, who wanted:

  • Clear repeatable criteria for choosing dividend shares
  • A joined‑up portfolio instead of a random collection of stocks
  • Straightforward explanations without the City jargon or hyperbolic BS of other newsletters

My own retirement portfolio holds exactly the same stocks as the newsletter's model portfolio, so it accurately reflects how I think about risk, income and long‑term returns in the real world.

I've also written a book about defensive value investing, I hold the Investment Management Certificate from CFA UK, and I've written many articles for Master Investor Magazine, Property Chronicle and others.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is this different from free articles and blog posts?
A: The newsletter gives you one highly focused model portfolio and ongoing, joined‑up guidance, not isolated ideas. You see how each share fits into an overall plan, with clear position sizes, updates and commentary month after month.

Q: Do you tell me exactly what to buy and when?
A: No. I share what I’m buying, selling or holding in the model portfolio, with full explanations. It’s not personalised advice, but it gives you a clear framework to make your own decisions.

Q: How many stocks are in the model portfolio?
A: Typically around 20 holdings. That's enough to be diversified, but few enough to be focused on the small number of companies that meet my quality, growth and income criteria.

Q: How do I receive the newsletter?
A: Each issue is delivered as a PDF, sent by email during the first week of each month. You’ll also be able to access it from the subscriber-only part of this website.

Q: Does the subscription auto-renew?
A: Yes. Your monthly or annual subscription will automatically renew until cancelled.

Q: Does the subscription fee rise with inflation?
A: No. Your subscription will automatically renew at the same price until cancelled, and there are no mid-subscription price rises.

Q: Can I cancel at any time?
A: Yes. You can cancel whenever you like and you won’t be charged again. Once cancelled, your monthly or annual plan will lapse at the end of the current subscription period.

Q: Do you give refunds?
A: No. Your subscription already includes a low-cost trial period, and if you'd like to subscribe annually but have doubts about such a long commitment, just subscribe monthly, at first. If you're happy with the newsletter after a few months, cancel your monthly subscription and upgrade to an annual subscription.

Q: Is this financial advice?
A: No. The newsletter is for general information and education only and does not take into account your personal circumstances. You should always do your own research and consider seeking independent financial advice if needed.

This website and the UK Dividend Stocks Newsletter provide information and education for investors. They do not provide financial advice or recommendations to buy or sell any specific investment.

An investment's income and capital can go down as well as up, especially over short periods. Over longer time horizons (5+ years), investing has historically offered better protection against inflation than cash.
